Ingredients

Functional

  • Beta-1,3/1,6-glucans (from baker's yeast)

Beta-1,3/1,6-glucans are polysaccharides obtained from the cell walls of baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Yeast-derived beta-1,3/1,6 glucans are more highly branched than beta-glucans from other sources, such as fungi, barley or oats, and are more extensively studied with respect to their effects on human health 1. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been notified that industry considers beta-glucans derived from baker’s yeast to be generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in foods and beverages and has not objected to their use for this purpose (GRN No. 000239).

  • Colostrum (bovine pre-milk)

Colostrum (bovine) is the pre-milk fluid obtained from the first milking of female cows just after they give birth. Bovine colostrum provides nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, growth factors and immune factors to the offspring to promote immunity and proper growth and development. Colostrum contains 3 to 4 times more protein than regular cow’s milk, a large proportion of which is comprised of antibodies called immunoglobulins (Ig) 1. Humans can benefit from the health-promoting properties of bovine colostrum, supplements of which are now available. Bovine colostrum supplementation is generally well tolerated 2.

  • Lactoferrin (from milk)

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein found in many bodily fluids such as milk, colostrum, saliva, tears and bile. It is a component of the innate immune response, acting as part of the body’s first line of defense against infection 1. For use in supplements, bovine lactoferrin can be purified from milk or milk derivatives, such as whey protein. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been notified that industry considers milk-derived lactoferrin to be generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use as an ingredient in sports and functional foods and has not objected to its use for this purpose (GRN No. 000077).

  • Modified citrus pectin

Modified citrus pectin. Citrus pectin is a polysaccharide obtained from orange or lemon rinds. Pectin is indigestible by humans, and so it can be broken down into smaller saccharide units to increase its absorbability, thus turning it into modified pectin. Modified citrus pectin is a source of dietary fiber 1. Modified citrus pectin is considered generally recognized as safe (GRAS) and is approved for use as a food additive by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 2.

Formulation

  • Glucose

Glucose is a monosaccharide sugar found in most plant and animal tissues. Cells in the body use glucose as their major source of energy and as an intermediate for many metabolic reactions. Glucose actually exists as two molecules that are mirror images of each other, D-glucose and L-glucose, but only D-glucose is biologically active in humans 1. Glucose is produced commercially from the breakdown of starch; corn starch is primarily used in the United States. Glucose is easily absorbed through the intestine and is used as the reference value to determine the glycemic index of foods, a measure of their effects on blood-glucose levels 2, 3.

  • Malic acid

Malic acid is an is an organic compound used as a flavoring agent in foods and pharmaceutical formulations to provide tartness and mask any bitter taste 1. It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a food additive 2.

Malic acid can also be used in skin care products for fragrance and to adjust the pH (the acidity or alkalinity) 3. According to the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (an independent committee established by the Personal Care Products Council, an industry trade association that thoroughly reviews and assesses the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics), malic acid is safe to use at the amounts present in our products 4.

  • Natural flavor(s)

Natural flavors are oils or extracts containing the flavoring constituents derived from a variety of sources. The natural flavors in Mannatech’s products may be derived from spices, fruits or fruit juices, vegetables or vegetable juices, herbs, bark, buds, roots, leaves or similar plant materials, or dairy products. The significant function of such ingredients in foods or supplements is for flavor rather than nutrition (21CFR501.22).

  • Silicon dioxide

Silicon dioxide, also known as silica, is added to capsule and tablet formulations to reduce clumping 1. Silica is found in many foods, particularly whole grains (oats and barley), sugar beets, sugar cane, soybeans, turnips, green beans 2. The average intake of silica in adults is 14-21 mg/day 3. The bioavailability of silicate additives is low 4. Silica that occurs in food and water has not been shown to cause any adverse effects 3.

  • Vegetable magnesium stearate

Magnesium stearate, a salt of stearic acid, is widely used in cosmetics, foods, and capsules as a lubricating agent. In dietary supplements it may contain a mixture of magnesium salts of different fatty acids.
Magnesium stearate is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) (21CFR184.1440) and is generally regarded as being nontoxic following oral administration. Oral consumption of large quantities may produce a laxative effect or cause mucosal irritation 1.
